Driving Test Cancellation Changes

The New Driving Test Cancellation Policy Aims to Reduce Waiting Times.

Since 8 April 2025, learner drivers will now need to provide more advance notice when changing or cancelling their car driving test to avoid losing their test fee.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) now requires a minimum of 10 full working days’ notice for any changes or cancellations. This is an increase from the current requirement of 3 full working days’ notice.

The change is intended to help reduce waiting times by giving the DVSA more time to reallocate test slots to other candidates.

Why the Change?

Many learner drivers who aren’t fully prepared for their test wait until the last minute to change or cancel their appointment. While this does free up a test slot, the short notice often makes it difficult for others – who are ready to take the test – to make the necessary arrangements in time.

As a result, these appointments sometimes go unused.

By requiring more notice for changes or cancellations, the DVSA aims to give other learners a better opportunity to book and prepare for those available slots. This change is expected to help reduce driving test waiting times overall.

Exceptions

You will still be able to apply for a refund if you have to change or cancel your test at short notice if you have:

  • an illness or injury that means you cannot take your test
  • suffered a bereavement
  • to take an exam at a school or college
  • had your driving licence stolen
